here’s a photo of what Grand Bahama Island looked like before and after it was hit by hurricane Dorian. For an entire day and a half, Dorian essentially parked over this region and barely moved. The storm also destroyed the island of Abaco. The total population of Abaco and Grand Bahama is about 70 thousand people. Normally these islands are a tourist hotspot, featuring beautiful all-inclusive resorts, golf courses, and marinas. According to reports, the grand Bahama airport was under 6 feet or 2 meters of water. 13 thousand houses, or around 45 percent of the homes in this region are either severely damaged or completely destroyed.

The UN thinks that around 60 thousand people will need food and 62 thousand will need clean drinking water. To make matters worse, if you happened to be injured during the storm, the main hospital was completely flooded. The main hospital in the Abaco islands is reportedly still intact and its currently sheltering 400 people, but it still needs medical supplies as well as food and water. Officials in the Bahamas say they received a tremendous number of calls from people trapped in flooded homes, and people trying to find loved ones.

One local radio station said it got reports of a 5-month-old baby stranded on a roof, and a woman with 6 children had to cut a hole in a roof to escape the rising water. The emergency services were having a very hard time rescuing people because the wind was so intense. In many cases, they were forced to turn back. The red cross has authorized 500 thousand dollars to be used for the first wave of disaster relief.

It's estimated that 5 people have lost their lives as a result of this hurricane, but real fatality numbers will have to be assessed once emergency services can actually access affected areas. The most populated island in the Bahamas, new providence did not experience much damage. New providence is home to a quarter of a million people. Hurricane Dorian has now downgraded to a category 2 hurricane after being a category 5 when it first struck. It's moving very slowly, 2 miles per hour, which is about as fast as the average person walks.

As of Monday night, Dorian dumped a maximum of 35 inches of rain in some places. It is expected to get very close to South Carolina on Thursday, and even North Carolina on Friday. It may also make it up to the Maritimes in Canada this weekend. But the storm is nowhere near as strong as it was earlier in the week. Many places along the Atlantic coast can expect rain, and even heavy rainfall this weekend. But even though most of us are safe from hurricane Dorian, that doesn’t change the fact that this hurricane ruined the lives of thousands of people.
